Staying competitive today requires faster, more reliable delivery from internal technical teams. This need has led to increased collaboration, with IT and DevOps organizations coming together to align behind common enterprise goals. In recent years, as businesses have sharpened their focus on security, DevSecOps has emerged as a practice, creating an opportunity to further expand cross-functional collaboration.
To shed light on how organizations can build upon the success of cross-functional technical teams in complex, hybrid, multi-cloud environments, EMA Research recently conducted a study in partnership with AppDynamics and VMware. Titled “Why Automation and Security Are Critical to Successful Cross-Functional Teams – DevSecOps,” the research focuses on where organizations can incorporate key functions to improve outcomes and how they can benefit from “shifting left” of critical operations in the development lifecycle, including security and automation. The study was conducted across the US, UK, France, and Germany and included 150 participants spanning multiple industries and job functions.
Three Strategies for Greater Success
In light of the findings, EMA advises DevOps to cooperate with security to make the shift to DevSecOps. This involves a culture change and adopting tools and automation. EMA also says that organizations must be strategic about helping cross-functional teams tackle the demands of delivering on customer needs. In addition, leaders should consider the resource constraints, increased security vulnerabilities, and expanding workloads these teams face. For all of these challenges, EMA experts believe automation offers an answer.
In the research report, EMA advises three key areas of focus for improving the success of cross-functional teams:
- People, including individuals, skillsets, and dynamics of the team members.
- Process, with repeatable, documented procedures for all team members to
- Tools, which can create a seamless environment that allows teams to work more efficiently and with greater agility in today’s increasingly complex, integrated enterprises. While people and processes are critical to the success of cross-functional teams, technology is the glue that brings these teams
